We note that the Fair Funding plans will mean huge cuts in central government funding for many many inner and west London councils from 2026-7. These come on top of cuts in central government funding which those councils have suffered since 2010, and at a time when the cost of councils’ statutory obligations such as temporary accommodation for the homeless, adult social care, and SEND, continue to rise.
We welcome the modest overall increases in central government funding for local authorities made by the government, and we understand the need to help out many councils outside London which have suffered much since 2010. However, we believe that has to be done without imposing further cuts on London councils.
We note the currently-scheduled cuts will affect several Labour councils, including Hammersmith and Fulham, the only local authority in London where Labour made gains from the Greens in the May 2026 council elections.
We call on the government to modify its plans so as not to impose cuts on London local authorities, and to schedule a return to 2010 levels of funding for local government.
We resolve to initiate a local labour-movement and community campaign to save and restore local government services, and call on Labour councillors to use their positions to promote and support this campaign and its activities.
