Template motion on EU free movement

We welcome Andy Burnham’s statement of 26 October that he is open to “honest discussion” about restoring free movement between the UK and the EU.

We note that a 30 September poll found a 59% to 32% majority in favour of Britain rejoining the EU.

We believe that restoring free movement, in particular, would be an expansion of rights and opportunities benefiting many millions of people. We believe that the cause of working-class unity across borders is best served by lower barriers between nations and social levelling-up across Europe.

We therefore call on the government to move fast in “resetting” relations with the EU. We believe that this should include rapid re-entry into the Single Market (with accompanying free movement) and the Customs Union, and a rapid move towards negotiations on rejoining the EU.
