The results for the CLP seats on Labour’s NEC are disappointing, with two seats won by CLPD-Momentum, two by Mainstream, but the other five by the right wing.

Back in the day, most votes were cast tightly for the left slate and the right slate, but this year more than ever the votes were dispersed among individuals.

In the first round, Jess Barnard of the CLPD-Momentum slate got almost twice as many votes as his slate-partner Gemma Bolton, and over twice as many as her slate-partner Yasmine Dar.

Cat Arnold of the Mainstream slate got over three times as many votes as her slate-partner Jovan Nepaul. In the vote transfers, a lot of Arnold’s “excess”, and even a fair bit of Barnard’s, went to right-wing candidates. At the end, Yasmine Dar was the “runner-up”, only a few votes short of being elected at Stage 12 of the count.

The other worrying figure was the low turnout, with only 36,127 votes in total.
