Labour women’s conference and trans rights

Motion being circulated in Islington South CLP. Note that Unison women’s conference on 10-11 February was organised on a trans-inclusive basis, without, as far as we know, any legal challenge or kickback (so far).

Note:

● The Labour Party has a long history of women’s organising which has played a vital role in shaping policy and representation.
● Recent decisions by the Labour Party National Executive Committee (NEC) regarding participation in the Labour Women’s Conference have generated concern among members about inclusion.
● Women in the Labour Party are not a single or uniform group, but include people with diverse experiences shaped by class, race, disability, sexuality, caring responsibilities, age, faith etc.
● Trans women are members of the Labour Party, are protected under the Equality Act 2010 on the basis of gender reassignment, and have long contributed to Labour’s campaigning, organising, and internal democracy.
● Women’s Conference should be a space that supports unity, respectful dialogue, and meaningful participation for women members across the party.

Believe:

● Women’s Conference should be inclusive and representative of the diversity of women within the Labour Party.

● Intersectional women’s organising strengthens Labour’s ability to address inequality and discrimination both within the party and in wider society.

Call on the Labour Party to:

● Commit to a Women’s Conference that is inclusive, representative, and grounded in intersectional principles, ensuring that the experiences of all women members are meaningfully taken into account.

● The Labour Party NEC to revise the arrangements for the Women’s Conference so that trans women are allowed to attend and fully participate in all aspects of women’s Labour events, including policy debates, motions, voting and committee elections.

● Ensure that arrangements for Women’s Conference support full and respectful participation by women members, including trans women, in a manner consistent with Labour’s commitment to equality and democratic engagement.

● Reaffirm support for women’s organising that reflects the full diversity of women’s lives and strengthens collective understanding across the Labour movement.
