A model motion on the disability benefit cuts.
1. We call on the Labour leadership not to proceed with the cuts to disabled benefits.
2. If the cuts are brought to Parliament, we call on our MP to vote against.
3. Instead of the cuts, we support increased taxes on the rich and/or a change in fiscal rules.
4. We ask the CLP officers to contact other CLPs in the area, local union branches, and local disabled people’s groups, to set up a local campaign committee with wide representation from such groups, in-person meetings, and public activity.
[The last clause will probably need to be reworded according to local circumstances, e.g. how you define “the area”, whether some other group (Trades Council or such) has already made an initiative and it’s a matter of supporting it, etc. Bear in mind that Labour Party rules now ban CLPs from formally affiliating to anything that the LP is not affiliated to nationally, so you have to word the CLP’s relation to a committee not as formal affiliation. Other activities which have been pursued in some areas which you may want to add to the motion are (a) calling on Labour councillors to make statements of protest (b) doing open letter signed by lots of Labour members to the MP. Bear in mind that we need to move fast on this, and not wait for often-slow labour-movement meetings schedule].
